Observe fireworks safety everyday

Family cookouts, vacations and fireworks are just a few things we look forward to during our Independence Day celebrations.

The glowing sparklers, the popping of firecrackers and that loud thud as a mortar travels through the air make our hearts race with anticipation to see what the next explosion of lights bring.

But then the celebration is ruined when careless and inappropriate use of fireworks results in injuries and sometimes death.

Here at Hurlburt Field we want everyone to enjoy their celebration, but in a safe manner.

The Fire Emergency Service Flight would like to help the Hurlburt populace enjoy a safe July Fourth by suggesting a few safety tips and rules that you may not know.

Safety Tips:

Hurlburt Field Instruction 32-2001, Chap 8, Para 8.8.2 states: The use of any fireworks is prohibited on Hurlburt Field. The only exception is approved or licensed pyrotechnic personnel who are contracted by the base to do a display or a training exercise.

If you're going to take part in the lighting of fireworks off base or while on vacation, follow these safety rules.

1. Do not use fireworks in areas that are severely drought stricken; follow county restrictions
2. Do not let children under the age of 14 use fireworks
3. Have a bucket of water nearby
4. Do not re-light any fireworks that have not detonated
5. Be sure you and others are at a safe distance before lighting fireworks
6. Do not wear loose clothing near fireworks
7. Never attempt to make your own fireworks

Always remember, safety is paramount. Make this year's celebration one to remember by being able to celebrate it again next year.

We hope that everyone has a safe and happy July Fourth.
