This photograph from a 1945 article published in the “San Francisco Examiner” features Retired Lieutenant Colonel Charles Russhon as a captain (center) after his return from Japan in the wake of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Russhon was one of the first Americans on the ground in both locations within 24 hours of the bombs being dropped on both.
