Sequestration is a fiscal policy procedure adopted by Congress to deal with the federal budget deficit. Simply put, sequestration is the cancellation of budgetary resources -- an automatic form of spending cutback.

Since the budget wasn't approved by the March 1 deadline, the Defense Department will face $46 billion of cuts throughout the fiscal year.
