Course Information
Description: Tracing its history to 1967, the Contemporary Irregular Warfare Course (CIWC) is the DOD’s longest running course of instruction on irregular warfare. CIWC is a 5 day operational military educational program that leverages academics and special operators alike to present irregular warfare (IW) theory, doctrine, concepts, and examples from the tactical to strategic level, employing presentations, tabletop exercises, case studies, and guided discussions. Students will gain a greater understanding of, and appreciation for, the types of missions that they will be involved with while assigned to SOCOM and, most likely, the preponderance of their careers in the DoD. CIWC fosters the application of critical thinking to IW enabling activities including intelligence, culture, law, information operations, and interagency cooperation.
Specifically, Day 1 is comprised of IW and cultural fundamentals and a look at airpower’s role in IW. For Days 2-4, a half day is devoted to each of the five core activities of IW (counterinsurgency (COIN), counterterrorism (CT), foreign internal defense (FID), unconventional warfare (UW), and stability operations (SO)) as well as information operations. The course will conclude on Day 5 with a look at contemporary and emerging issues in IW and culminate in a Capstone Exercise.
Target Audience: This course is designed for USSOCOM and subordinate command personnel in the grades of E-5 through O-5, as well as partner nation SOF personnel, seeking to expand their knowledge and understanding of irregular warfare. Interagency personnel involved with coordinating, planning, supporting, or executing core irregular warfare activities are also highly encouraged to attend. SOF operations, intelligence, and planning personnel will be given enrollment priority, however all SOCOM personnel and General Purpose Forces students will be accepted on a space-available basis. Students should possess the maturity and experience to grasp strategic level concepts and understand how to leverage them at the operational and tactical levels.
Prerequisites/References: Students should familiarize themselves with AFDD 3-2 Annex IRREGULAR WARFARE prior to course attendance.
Course Enrollment: CIWC is an Open Enrollment course. As such, it requires no prior approval from USAFSOS faculty. Students are required to obtain a training line number (TLN) from their unit training manager. For enrolling through unit training manager (Open Enrollment link above), supply the PDS code found in the above panel, along with desired course dates to your local training manager, who will in turn reserve a course quota for you in the training system. After obtaining a TLN, students need to access and complete registration for the course through Blackboard. Please see the link below and follow the instructions. All students should request a USAFSOS Blackboard account, which also enables access to specific course materials.
