Air Commandos awarded record number of CCAF degrees in 2010

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- 2010 has been a year of many achievements for Hurlburt Field. And in addition to keeping the country safe, providing humanitarian assistance for others and taking care of their families, Air Commandos broke a base record with respect to their education.

Approximately 347 Hurlburt Field Airmen earned their associate degrees through the Community College of the Air Force in 2010. Many of those Airmen received their degrees during a graduation ceremony at the Soundside Club here Nov. 10.

This year's total of CCAF degree earners is the largest in Hurlburt Field's history. In fact, according to the office of the Dean of Academic Affairs for the CCAF, the base had the fifth largest amount of CCAF graduates in the Air Force this year, just behind Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, Ramstein Air Base, Germany, and Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va.

Airmen underwent months and years of technical training, online courses, lunch time and night classes, and long hours of studying to satisfy the necessary 64 credit hours and requirements needed to receive the degree. Along the graduate's academic journey, the counseling and advising staff of the education office supported the students by handling $4 million of tuition assistance forms, providing video-conferencing for classes and answering questions in-person, over the phone or online for Hurlburt's Air Commandos any time, any place.

"The CCAF works really hard to support the Airmen and help education offices assist them [in getting] whatever they need to earn these degrees," said Dolores Johnson, Education and Training section chief. "Anything we can do to enhance their career is an excellent thing for us, too."

Ms. Johnson and her six-person team do more than help with setting up classes for CCAF degree completion. As part of the 1st Special Operations Force Support Squadron's Force Development flight, they also help provide promotion testing, formal and base training for a base populace with one of the busiest operations tempos in the U.S. military.

"The biggest challenge for Airmen [to complete their degrees] here are the deployments, but they have a lot of inner resources to see it through," she said. "I love when I leave here in the evening and see classroom doors open, people coming in with books and studying. They're really great people."

Staff Sgt. Jennifer Santillan, 1st Special Operations Force Support Squadron Quality Assurance evaluator, received her associate degree in restaurant, hotel and fitness management at the ceremony. She said after realizing she didn't have that many classes to complete, she focused on taking as many courses as she could before giving birth to her son earlier this year.
"Ever since I've been in the Air Force, I feel like I've done nothing but better myself, move up and reach my goals," Sergeant Santillan said. "Many people don't realize how close they are to earning it. This CCAF degree is definitely a step forward in my career and a lot of help toward getting my bachelors degree."

Chief Master Sgt. Dexter Mitchell, 1st Special Operations Wing command chief and graduation guest speaker, congratulated the Airmen for their academic achievement. But he also urged them not to rest on their laurels.

"Graduates, I hope you take time to pat yourself on the back for a job well done," Chief Mitchell said. "But if you stop now, you're not just quitting on yourself; you're quitting on our Air Force and our country. What you're learning in school today will determine whether we as a military and nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future. The future of America depends on you."

According to the school website, the CCAF is a federally-chartered degree-granting institution that partners with more than 90 affiliated Air Force schools, 82 education service offices located worldwide and more than 1,500 civilian academic institutions to serve more than 320,000 active duty, guard and reserve enlisted personnel, making the CCAF the world's largest community college system.
