The Air Force Special Operations Command History Office swept the Air Force History and Museum Program major command awards -- a first for any organization since the awards inception, three years ago.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton A. Schwartz presented the John T. Bohn and Gen. Bryce Poe II awards to the AFSOC history office at the AFHMP conference award dinner May 13 at the National Museum of the Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.

"This was a team award," said Herb Mason, AFSOC history director. "We are a close team. I am most pleased for them and the leadership. Without the people who did the work and the people who support the work, this would not have been possible."

The John T. Bohn award is presented to the best overall MAJCOM history program for the Air Force while the Gen. Bryce Poe II award is presented to the MAJCOM with the best annual history.

"We have a great team, mission and leadership," said Tim Brown, AFSOC deputy historian. "This is a great environment to get absorbed in and not even know you are working."

The history office is tasked with gathering and submitting annual histories that detail the significant events AFSOC brings to today's joint fight. They are also responsible for documenting the actions of past Air Commandos to focus on the insight of their operations to reinvest important information into the command's decision making process.

The history office helped the command defend its position for additional gunships and new capabilities requirements by documenting in detail the gunship's activities through their lifespan.

They also raised historical consciousness by leading AFSOC's team heritage display during U.S. Special Operations Command's Special Operations Forces week in Tampa, Fla.

The history office also provided the Air Force Special Operations School content to conduct a two hour AFSOC heritage block during their Intro to Special Ops course. This course was specifically designed to provide new personnel to AFSOC insight into its unique mission and demands.

"This command has always been focused on their heritage and history," said Mr. Mason. "The leadership is supportive, which makes things easier."
