Amy Cooper AFSOC Public Affairs HURLBURT FIELD, Fla, -- Air Force Special Operations Command officials have announced the command's nomination for the GEICO Military Service Award. Senior Master Sgt. Ted Millard, AFSOC weapons systems manager superintendent, will now compete against other major commands' nominees for the award. According to the company's Web site, the GEICO Military Service Award is presented to an enlisted member in each service for achievements or contributions in drug and alcohol abuse prevention, fire safety and prevention, and traffic safety and accident prevention. Sergeant Millard was nominated for his work with the Afghan National Army during a year-long deployment. Despite language barriers, he taught the Afghan soldiers everything from how to operate vehicles to how to read road signs. In true quiet professional manner, Sergeant Millard is humble about the nomination. "It's pretty cool," he said. "I was surprised there was an award out there for (this type of work." Sergeant Millard's supervisor, Chief Master Sgt. John Reese, is happy to boast on Sergeant Millard' s behalf. "He is certainly deserving of consideration for this award, especially for his work during his deployment to Afghanistan," the chief said. "Here is an individual who took years of Air Force training and applied that knowledge under very difficult conditions." The award recipients from each service will be recognized during a spring ceremony in Washington, D.C. "I'm excited to see what happens," said Sergeant Millard.
