Hurlburt Airmen were recognized as the Air Force's best aviation resource managers for their work to ensure the success of the Air Force Special Operations Command aviation and flying programs in 2006.

Master Sgt. Gregory Voss, 720th Operations Support Squadron, was recognized in the senior non-commissioned officer category while Tech. Sgt. Shawn Jones, HQ/AFSOC, was recognized in the headquarters staff category.

As aviation resource managers they are responsible for the organization and management of the flying hour program and other aviation-related programs.

"Sergeant Voss is one of those informal leaders we learn about in [professional military education]," said Maj. Jerry Kung, Sergeant Voss's commander. "He's always pushing others forward into the limelight, especially his troops."

Sergeant Voss' citation states he took charge of 167 aviation resource managers during the command functional manager's absence.

"He has also been selected for senior master sergeant," said Major Kung. "That's a surpassing achievement, and up to now, a capstone to an outstanding career."

Aviation resource managers are also key to ensuring aviators and special tactics operators are current on their training.

Sergeant Jones found that AFSOC flight surgeon flying time requirements were not being tracked properly and created a guide to educate flight surgeons and other aviation resource managers, according to his citation.

"Tech. Sgt. Jones is very professional and passionate about what he does, and is the first person to volunteer to help out for any task at hand," said Chief Master Sgt. Darcy Standish, Sergeant Jones' supervisor.

Sergeant Jones was also the Air Force aviation resource manager of the year in 1999 in the Airman category.

"Once you've worked with Tech. Sgt. Jones, you see his outstanding performance comes natural to him," said Chief Darcy.
