The 1st Special Operations Logistics Readiness Squadron is in the process of refurbishing a gun truck from Tikrit, Iraq, for all to see at the Enlisted Heritage Hall at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.

The 1058th Gun Truck Detachment in Iraq decommissioned the gun truck after it encountered an improvised explosive device in Iraq.

During a recent visit to Maxwell's Enlisted Heritage Hall, Airmen from the 1st SOLRS volunteered to refurbish the battle-broken truck for display.

The 1st SOLRS members have been deployed during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, providing convoy operations in gun trucks just like this one. Having all the means and tools to restore this truck, they jumped on it.

"One minute I'm on the phone with them, the next thing I know they're here to pick it up," said Chief Master Sgt. Malcolm McVicar, director of the Enlisted Heritage Research Institute. "These Airmen are extremely motivated to get this truck back to us in two months, and their work is saving the Air Force more than $20,000."

The truck arrived at Hurlburt Field April 6, and Airmen from the 1st SOLRS are already in the early stages of restoration. The general repair section of vehicle and equipment management flight have taken in the gun truck for repairs.

When asked about the feelings around the shop about working on something that hits so close to home, Tech. Sgt. Herman Lett, 1st SOLRS, said, "The history of enlisted Air Force members participating in Army convoy operations will be preserved for all to know and see what we've accomplished down range in Iraq and Afghanistan."

The 1st SOLRS has a goal to get the gun truck back to Chief McVicar and the Enlisted Heritage Hall by July for an official unveiling during the Senior Enlisted Leaders Conference where Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Rodney J. McKinley, will see the Airmen's work for the first time.
