Appeals speed up via Virtual MPF

Active-duty Airmen seeking a correction to or removal of an evaluation report may now receive quicker results by initiating an appeal to the Evaluation Reports Appeal Board which became available through the virtual Military Personnel Flight Monday.

When members apply for an ERAB, they are requesting that a previously finalized enlisted performance report or officer performance report be either altered, replaced with a corrected report or thrown out. The most effective evidence surrounding ERAB submissions consists of statements from the evaluators who signed the report or from other individuals in the rating chain which the report was signed, according to Staff Sgt. Christopher Barlett, 1st Special Operations Mission Support Squadron combat personnel NCO-in-charge of force management.

"Before ERAB processing responsibilities were transferred to the vMPF, career enhancement's responsibilities consisted of reviewing the submission package for accuracy and legitimacy," Sergeant Barlett said.

After verifying this, the ERAB package was mailed to Air Force Personnel Center Headquarters. Approval took four to six weeks from the date the submission was received.

"Now that the process is virtual, this prevents the delay in AFPC HQ awaiting the submission via snail mail," Sergeant Barlett said. "It also ensures the package is not lost in the mail."

Airmen may choose to apply to the board to seek a correction or removal of a performance report, promotion recommendation form, letter of evaluation, training report or retention recommendation form for up to three years after the document has become a matter of official record.

"From personal experience, only about two, maybe three, get approved a quarter," Sergeant Barlett said. "However, each request is considered on a case-by-case basis. The stronger the member makes their package, the better chance they have at approval."

For more information, Airmen should review Attachment 1 of Air Force Instruction 36-2401, Correcting Officer and Enlisted Evaluation Re-ports, or call the Air Force Contact Center at (800) 616-3775 (Option 1, 1, 2), (210) 565-5000, or DSN 665-5000.
