At least 40 organizations gathered here for the Combined Federal Campaign kick-off event Sept. 25.

The annual event allowed CFC workers the opportunity to visit with the local charities.

Roy Jones Jr., a former professional boxer, said he advocates for charitable organizations, like the CFC, when he spoke at this year's opening.

"I always try to give back to people who give," Jones said. "I know the [CFC] is giving, so this was a perfect opportunity for me to speak."

The slogan for Hurlburt's 2013 CFC campaign is "Change Life" with a goal of $450,000.

Established in 1961, the CFC is the world's largest and most successful workplace charity campaign, with more than 200 campaigns throughout the country and internationally.

"There are so many people in need and this is the one time throughout the year to ask any federal employee to donate money to any cause they believe in," said Diane Thomas, Combined Federal Campaign of United Way Okaloosa-Walton Counties vice president.

Since its inception, the federal community has donated more than $6 billion to the CFC.

The campaign runs Sept. 30 through Nov. 8. Contributions can be made through squadron or group representatives in the form cash, check or payroll deduction. Donors may designate which charities receive their money by filling out a pledge form.
