The total number of furlough days for Department of Defense civilians has been reduced from 11 to six according to an Aug. 6 announcement by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel. The reduction affects more than 1,500 civilian employees assigned to Air Force Special Operations Command units worldwide.

"The AFSOC civilian workforce has always been a critical part of our team. Their talent and experience is absolutely vital to special operations aviation," said Lt. Gen. Eric E. Fiel, AFSOC commander.

Civilian furloughs began the week of July 8 and were originally planned to last through Sept. 21 with two furlough days per pay period. With the reduction to six days, civilian furloughs are scheduled to end the week of Aug. 12.

The Air Force implemented several actions to reduce costs in addition to civilian furloughs, including reducing the Fiscal Year 2013 Flying Hour Program, cutting facilities maintenance, cancelling non-mission essential travel and reviewing Overseas Contingency Operation requirements.
