JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas (AFNS) --
A Kadena special operations airman is one of four winners of the 2014 Lance P. Sijan U.S. Air Force Leadership Award, Air Force officials announced Aug. 19.
Senior Airman Tristan Windle, assigned to the 320th Special Tactics Squadron, Air Force Special Operations Command, at Kadena Air Base, Japan, won the junior enlisted category.
The Sijan award is named in honor of the late Capt. Lance P. Sijan, a U.S. Air Force Academy graduate and combat pilot who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his intrepidity while evading capture by the North Vietnamese, and during his subsequent captivity as a prisoner of war. The award annually recognizes four Airmen who demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities. Officer and enlisted honorees are chosen in senior and junior categories.
The three remaining Sijan Award winners are:
Senior officer category:
Lt. Col. Stephen Matthews, assigned to the 49th Air Refueling Squadron, Air Mobility Command, at McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas.
Junior officer category:
Capt. John Sullivan, assigned to the 509th Security Forces Squadron, Air Force Global Strike Command, at Whiteman AFB, Missouri.
Senior enlisted category:
Master Sgt. Janell McGivern, assigned to the 823rd Maintenance Squadron, Air Combat Command, at Nellis AFB, Nevada.
