RAF Mildenhall -- Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James A. Cody visited the men and women of the 352nd Special Operations Wing during a trip here, Jan. 28.
Cody spent the day getting to know the Airmen of the 352nd SOW, viewing CV-22 Osprey and MC-130J Commando II aircraft and recognizing outstanding performers within individual units.
“It was great to see Chief Cody and how he interacts with Airmen,” said Tech. Sgt. Stacey Mente, 352nd Special Operations Wing manpower analyst. “He really took the time to show his appreciation for what we do every day.”
During these face-to-face discussions, the chief consistently expressed his gratitude to Airmen and their families for the many sacrifices they make on a daily basis.
“The reason for this visit is to thank you and thank your families,” said Cody. “There’s nothing easy about our business…what we’re asking you to do and how hard you’re working. That service and sacrifice does come at a cost and it comes at a cost to your families,”
Additionally, Cody asked Airman what is most important to them today and what they find frustrating.
“It’s really important that I hear what’s on your mind,” said Cody. “If I can answer any questions, provide perspective, in-depth rational or descriptions, I’ll do it. If not, I’ll get you answers.”
One of the main topics on many Airmen’s mind was the changes to the Enlisted Evaluation System. Cody addressed the concerns by adding perspective to the problems faced under the old system and the benefits of the new program.
“We have a lot of great Airmen out there…performing exceptionally well, but there was nothing in the system that gave a commander the ability to influence the Air Force on who was next [to promote],” said Cody. “This wasn’t about moving anyone to the left. We are moving 15 to 20 percent of the people to the right.”
Cody also met with small groups of Airmen, offering advice on leadership and informing them on the ever-changing climate of the Air Force.
“Gaining insight into the chief’s perspective was eye-opening,” said Wayne Bukaty, 352nd Special Operations Wing logistic superintendent.” I thought it was interesting to see the top down view of our social programs and how we’re changing the resilience program to combat suicide rates.”
Cody closed the day with an all call where he discussed topics ranging from work-life balance to special duty selection, ending with an emphasis on pride in service and sacrifice.
“Feel good about what you do and be proud. Do it right and you’ll always feel that way," said Cody.
