AFSOC aviator named first chief technology officer

A retired aviator stepped into a new role recently as overseer of synchronization of all Air Force Special Operations Command systems and technology efforts.

Todd Wieser, a retired MH-35 Pave Low helicopter pilot, is AFSOC’s new chief technology officer (CTO).

This is the first command to have a CTO that focuses on command-wide mission systems as well; to include aircraft, special tactics mission systems, and other information technologies.

“The complexity and number of systems used across the force is continually growing, and we have to have strategic and operational level thought and planning to ensure our forces are effective,” said Wieser.

This new position was created to establish systems and technology strategy, and synchronize external efforts to ensure Air Force Special Operations Forces have interoperable and integrated systems that work with conventional, special operations, coalition, and other forces and agencies.

“Some of my immediate focuses will be architecture and technologies solutions to make mission systems automated,” said Wieser. “This will ensure ground teams, aircraft, and command and control nodes have systems to effectively and reliably interoperate and pass information.”

AFSOC’s CTO team includes a systems engineer, enterprise systems architect, and other technical representatives.

To better ensure technology objectives are achieved, CTO-published guidance, baseline requirements, and standards will be followed by all internal AFSOC directorates.

In addition to his time flying with AFSOC units, Wieser has served as an Air Force engineer. He also holds an aeronautical engineering bachelor's degree and a systems engineering master’s degree.
