Moving to Cannon Assistance

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. --  As the time draws nearer for the AC-130H move to Cannon Air Force Base, many of you have already received orders, and many more will be receiving them soon. 

I recognize that for many of you this move presents challenging issues. 

To address some of your concerns and questions, we've held two town hall meetings this year. During both meetings, leadership and experts from both bases as well as community leaders from the Clovis area were on hand to answer your pressing questions. 

You can expect more meetings of this sort in the future. 

Additionally, I want to encourage everyone facing this move to take advantage of an invaluable resource here at Hurlburt: the Airman and Family Readiness Center.
The A&FRC is aware of your concerns and have a variety of resources available to assist you with your upcoming move to Cannon. 

They have a wealth of information about Cannon AFB and the surrounding towns in both CD and hard-copy formats. The CD includes all of the relocation entitlements and information on base resources and services, such as childcare, youth center, education for adults, housing and spouse employment on base, as well community information about local schools, employment, activities and recreation for adults and children. 

The Clovis Chamber of Commerce has provided the A&FRC with hard copy information regarding the area, local business, colleges, maps, and more. 

And, of course in this electronic age, multiple websites are available for reference, as well. 

To address your financial concerns, the A&FRC staff has coordinated with local and federal agencies to put together a pamphlet that educates our military members on the "Options for Homeowners on Current Market." 

Additionally, on Nov. 13, the Florida Office of Financial Regulation will present a workshop called "Owning a Home in Today's Market", which will cover the pros and cons of home ownership, educate attendees about mortgage terms and identify programs available to military members. This workshop will be held at the A&FRC from 1-3 p.m. Seating is limited, so call the A&FRC to RSVP now. 

If you miss this workshop, there are still more options for assistance available. Our A&FRC has partnered with the Eglin A&FRC to be a host site for the new Department of Defense-sponsored Financial Challenge Roadshow event to address the financial concerns, with a special emphasis on the housing issue in this area. This all-day event is scheduled for Jan. 14, 2009 at the Eglin Officers' Club, with keynote speakers in the morning and breakout sessions in the afternoon. More details will become available as the date gets closer. 

Because everyone's situation is different, I recommend that you schedule an individual consultation with the A&FRC to address your specific financial concerns with one of their financial consultants. For those with multiple complex issues, the A&FRC has three Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education-accredited financial counselors on staff. 

Finally, our A&FRC has been working closely with Cannon's A&FRC to keep abreast of the issues. Rest assured, these teams are committed to ensuring that you receive the most current information, and to linking you to the best resources for your individual needs.
