Hurricane Dennis eyes Gulf Coast, packing major winds
HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- Lines at the gas station here snarled traffic July 8 as people prepared to evacuate before Hurricane Dennis made landfall. Gas, water, ice, batteries and hurricane survival staples grew scarce. Base officials ordered the evacuation of all but mission-essential personnel July 8, which should reduce the 16,000-plus population here to fewer than 200 people.
