The 919th Special Operations Group welcomed a new commander during an assumption of command ceremony at Duke Field, Feb. 5, 2022.

U.S. Air Force Col. Matthew Barry took command of the 919th SOG and was described as someone with the leadership and vision needed to guide the only Reserve unit of its kind.

“I think Matt’s wealth of experience is exactly what this special operations group needs,” said U.S. Col. Jason Grandy, commander of the 919th Special Operations Wing. “I couldn’t be happier that he is here.”

Barry last served as deputy commander of the 49th Operations Group, Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico.

“I am honored to join the 919th Special Operations Wing,” said Barry. “I look forward to applying my experiences in hopes of making it an even better place.”

Barry led multiple squadrons in geographical separated locations in his previous assignment. He also provided more than 700 pilots and sensor operators to combat units, annually.

“While he is a newcomer to the 919th SOG, he is no stranger to Air Force Special Operations Command and the formal training unit MQ-9 Reaper missions,” said Grandy. “He is a graduated squadron commander and an extraordinarily experienced instructor pilot for the C-21, KC-10, MQ-1 and MQ-9.”

During his first speech to the group, Barry said he is ready to take on his new role with the 919th SOG.

“I am deeply humbled to be working with each and every one of you,” said Barry. “Your unparalleled ability to accomplish the mission, provides the solid foundation for me to advocate on your behalf.”

Barry thanked Grandy, the 919th SOW and extended his appreciation to his family and father for providing him the example of how to be a Citizen Airman Commando.

“Thank you for the warm welcome and opportunity to lead such a fantastic organization,” said Barry. “I am here to ensure the Airmen of the 919th SOG are well taken care of.”

Barry is a native of North Littlerock, Arizona, and joined the Reserve in 2009. He now supports the vast array of missions for AFSOC in his new position with the 919th SOG.

“It’s a huge day and, on behalf of the 919th SOW family, we would like to extend a special welcome to Barry and his family,” said Grandy. “There is no way we can do the things we get to do without the love, support and sacrifices of our families.”
