Combat controller receives Silver Star

Lt. Gen. Donny Wurster, Air Force Special Operations Command commander, pins the Silver Star on Tech. Sgt. Scott Innis, 22nd Special Tactics Squadron, during a medal ceremony at McChord Air Force Base, Wa., Dec. 18. The Silver Star, the nation's third highest decoration for valor, was presented first to Sergeant Innis for his actions during a firefight with enemy forces in Afghanistan during spring 2006. Combat controller receives Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Air Force Combat Action Medal

Tech. Sgt. Jason Dryer, a combat controller with the 22nd Special Tactics Squadron, is pictured during the unit's recent deployment to Southwest Asia. During this deployment, the Humvee he and his Army Special Forces teammates were riding in detonated an improvised explosive device. Sergeant Dryer was thrown from the vehicle and knocked unconscious. Despite his serious injuries, the combat controller was able to return to his forward operating base to finish his rotation. Sergeant Dryer received a Purple Heart for this incident, and earned a Bronze Star with valor for his actions during a firefight with Taliban forces later in the same deployment. Battlefield Airman honored for actions in Afghanistan

Tech. Sgt. Scott Innis, a combat controller with the 22nd Special Tactics Squadron, is pictured during his 2006 deployment to Afghanistan. During this deployment, Sergeant Innis served as a joint terminal air controller attached to an Army Special Forces team. One day, his team's forward operating base came under heavy enemy fire. Sergeant Innis risked his life by climbing up a small, wooden observation tower in the middle of the base in order to direct close air support against the enemy. Despite making himself a magnet for bullets and rocket propelled grenades, the combat controller stayed in the tower for 24 hours directing fire, resulting in the elimination of more than 100 enemy fighters. R. Lee Ermey, host of the Mail Call military technology show, films a segment in front of the Air Force Special Operations School's terrorist capabilities demonstration range at Hurlburt Field, Fla., on Mar. 21. An upcoming episode of the show focuses on Air Force Special Operations Command. "Gunny" Ermey, a retired Marine, is well known both for hosting the show and for his role as a tough-as-nails drill instructor in the film "Full Metal Jacket." He fired a variety of weapons at the range and even prepared what he called "fifty calibre fruit salad" by disintegrating a watermelon at long range with a Barrett rifle more often used to destroy unexploded ordnance on the battlefield.
